A strong cup of coffee has a greater effect on men than women …
BBC News UK
In a study on 668 healthy volunteers an espresso pepped up men after just 10 minutes. Women also became more alert after the beverage but less so. The University of Barcelona researchers say some of this effect might be psychological because decaffeinated coffee also worked to some extent. Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry reports the work. The volunteers were asked to drink either a classic espresso containing 100mg of caffeine or a decaffeinated espresso containing 5mg of caffeine. Then the researchers looked for changes in alertness over the following minutes and hours. Both men and women saw an improvement in their activity levels after drinking the classic espresso and these effects began after as little as 10 minutes.

Yet there’s a broad recognition in much of the aid community that a major rethink is necessary that groups would be more effective if they borrowed more tools from the business world and that there is too much “gotcha” scrutiny on overhead rather than on what they actually accomplish. It’s notable that leaders of xfam and Save the Children have publicly endorsed the book and it’s certainly becoming more socially acceptable to note that businesses can also play a powerful role in fighting poverty. “Howard Schultz has done more for coffee-growing regions of Africa than anybody I can think of” Michael Fairbanks a development expert said of the chief executive of Starbucks. By helping countries improve their coffee-growing practices and brand their coffees Starbucks has probably helped impoverished African coffee farmers more than any aid group has. Fairbanks himself demonstrates that a businessman can do good even as he does well. Rwanda’s president Paul Kagame hired Mr.
Starbucks May Cut 401(k) Match
U.S. News & World Report DC
Matches begin at 25 cents for each dollar contributed up to the first 4 percent of pay for workers with less than 36 months on the job and gradually perk up until they max out at $1. 50 for each dollar saved after 120 months or more of service. The coffee company plans to spend about $15 million on 401(k) matches this year. But like most 401(k) plans Starbucks reserves the right to change modify or terminate these benefits at any time with or without notice. And 2009 may be the year that the coffee company does so. The Seattle-based giant told employees the company won’t guarantee that it will make a company match to their “future roast” 401(k) accounts next year. And if they do provide a matching contribution it may be at a different rate.
