He roasts some of the world’s finest coffees in a giant roaster in the corner of the cafe and often invites curious customers to join in “cupping” and tasting the coffees — a way to evaluate coffee beans that is similar to wine tasting.

Li Yan was killed in Kunming on Wednesday when an ammonia bomb in his backpack unexpectedly went off as he was walking out of the bathroom of the coffee house Xinhua cited Du Min vice mayor and head of the city’s public security bureau as saying. No other people were hurt in the blast it said. Traces of the explosives and DNA samples taken from the scene matched those from two bus bombings in the city on July 21 leading police to confirm that Li was behind the earlier bombings Xinhua said. They later found ammonia explosives electric detonators bullets and a home-made gun in Li’s apartment it said adding that he had been sentenced to nine years in jail for robbery and other charges in 2001 but was released early for good behaviour. Two people died and 14 were injured in the July bus bombings which happened amid a nationwide security clampdown weeks ahead of the Beijing lympics.

I couldn’t help but be moved by his words since we are neighbors: Sameh lives in the Gaza Strip and I on the other side in Israel. My kibbutz while officially on the list of the Surrounding Gaza settlements has never thankfully been hit by kassam rockets. My experiences with the “Tzeve Adom” (Red Alerts) are from my work at the Sapir College where I am on faculty. I no longer remember how many tzeve adoms there have been or how many students and faculty and staff I have hugged or tissues I have used to wipe away their tears. I have barely missed some kassam attacks like the one that knocked out the windows in the office next to mine or the one that fell near the clinic on campus when I was comforting students on the other side.

December 24 2008: Efforts to improve the visibility of Kenyan coffee internationally are in top gear going by the latest announcement by the custodian of the industry to get a brand name. Coffee Board of Kenya has advertised for a tender calling on designers to create a trade mark and a brand name the national coffee brand. Being developed with funding from the European Union it will see Kenyan coffee recognised internationally as a brand for its unique qualities. This is expected to increase its demand and as a result improve prices across the board for all classes and grades from the country.

Today with more concern for the environment and higher costs of petroleum products many firelogs are now made with natural vegetable waxes instead of petroleum waxes. Since the vegetable waxes are a form of biomass burning these natural firelogs is almost global-warming gas neutral. Another new type of environmentally-friendly firelog Java-Log is made from recycled coffee grounds. If you accidentally tear open the bag around the log the coffee odor is very apparent. Coffee grounds have a high heat content so these logs produce 25% more heat than standard sawdust firelogs. Also the flames are more brilliant from the coffee. All-wood compressed sawdust firelogs and bricks are available in some areas.

She is having blood tests weekly (sometimes several times a week) and IVs as well. We’ve had to travel to Sacramento for a bone biopsy and I have missed work for several days in order to be by her side during these times. In the early hours of the day I will visit the downtown Starbucks for my usual cafe misto and a mocha for my wife. In so doing over the past several months the team there has grown to know my family well and often asks about them.
